For over 30 years, I’ve been a huge fan of The Eagles. I literally wore out the Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 cassette tape. Much of the world may view Stairway To Heaven as the greatest rock song of all time, but to me, the chord progression of Hotel California is an absolute masterpiece. It was the first song I learned to play (and have forced every band I’ve joined to play it!). Needless to say, when I heard Don Felder was coming to town, I had to be there.
For an Eagles fan, the set list was perfection. Every hit was there, for nearly two hours building to the crescendo that was…(wait for it)…Hotel California! Starting with Already Gone and One of These Nights, Felder then transitioned to Pride & Joy in a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan. In a nod to his solo work, next was Wash Away and You Don’t Have Me from the Road to Forever album.
He and the band effortlessly breezed through amazing, powerful renditions of Eagle’s monster hits: Victim of Love, Heartache Tonight, Life In The Fast Lane, and many others. Felder, while notable for bringing a harder rock sound to the Eagles, did a terrific job on the softer hits such as Tequila Sunrise, Witchy Woman and Peaceful Easy Feeling.
Throughout the show, Felder was personable, gracious, funny and at ease – clearly enjoying himself, cracking jokes about his former band (“The Seagulls”, etc.) and reminiscing about living in Boston many years earlier.
One thing I wasn’t sure what to expect is the vocals, in particular how the harmonies are handled. Well, I’m happy to report that both Felder and the band sound fabulous, doing justice to every one of the songs. The five-part harmony of Seven Bridges Road is a great barometer of a band’s virtuosity – and Felder & Co. sounded fantastic.
Don’s embarked on a 2015 tour that likely takes him to a music venue near you. If you’re a fan of The Eagles, or of classic 70’s rock in general, catch the show – it’s a real treat!
